Voyagers: Social Learning Program

The Voyagers! Social Learning Program is a direct instruction, educational program that allows children and teens the opportunity to learn, practice, and generalize social-communication skills on a daily basis.  It is one of the best things you can do to help your child learn, expand, and develop a better understanding of the social skills that are critical for his/her independence and success later in life.

Most importantly, however, our Social Learning Program is a chance for children/teens to make and have fun with friends that they may not experience anywhere else.  We believe in building on children’s strengths while helping them understand and navigate with the world around them.

Tuesday-Thursday

(2:30pm-4:30pm)

Goals:

• Learn and improve social, communication, and recreational skills
• Make friends
• Explore and expand their individual strengths and interests
• Feel happy, accepted, and anxiety-free
• Have FUN!!

Benefits

• Small group social-communication skill instruction by a licensed special education teacher

Enrollment Info:

• Grades K-8
• 6 week sessions
• Must be able to participate in a group of up to 4 students
• Must not have any aggressive behavior
• Must be able to use the bathroom independently
• Transportation provided from Snipes and College Park Elementary

Sample Activities:

Create! Children will have fun completing structured and exploration activities with a variety of art materials including paint, beads, feathers, play-doh, and more!

Care! Learn about feelings, friendship, having a conversation, listening, being a good sport, personal space, accepting no, etc. For the complete list of topics we cover in our curriculum, please click here: Social Group Curriculum We also have an Oasis Kids Care program that promotes community awareness activities.

Imagine! Dressing up to role play real life scenarios such as going to the vet, doctor, grocery store, or restaurant which will help prepare our students during real life experiences!

Build! Opportunity to build castles, buildings, and more using legos, blocks, kinex, etc. Students are encouraged to join in, take turns, make comments, and ask questions during these activities.

Move! Children will have the opportunity to learn games and activities that are common at recess, sleepovers, and field day. Yoga and dance units included!

Learn! Children in elementary school will receive assistance with homework as needed while learning how to balance asking for help and completing tasks independently.  Parents will also have the option of their student receiving additional support with IEP goals (K-5).

Explore! STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills are so important and our students seem to have a natural ability and interest in this field.  The Social Learning Program at OASIS NC recognizes this and fosters a deeper love and appreciation for STEM by designing engaging science experiments that expand our students’ vocabulary and knowledge.

Nourish! Diet and nutrition are so important for every child, but for children with autism, getting your child to eat fruits and vegetables can be extra challenging.  Snacks at OASIS NC are always sugar, gluten, dairy, and casein free.  We use our strategies to encourage our students to try new foods (mainly fruits and vegetables) while educating them on the benefits of whole foods (unprocessed).

Relax! Learning what to do during “down time” is also important for our students!  Shaving cream, sand play, water play, books, etc. will help our students learn which activities help them relax and what to do while they wait.

*Children attending our Social Learning Program must be able to (1) communicate verbally, (2) participate in a small group, (3) be potty trained, and (4) have no aggressive, self-injurious, or destructive behaviors.*
